Camping out is one of the easiest ways to save money while traveling. Both private and public campgrounds are nearly always cheaper than any other paying option, and hikers, cyclist, and bikers can often find free out of the way places to camp that provide privacy, solitude, and a unique view of the world at night.

The biggest concern for more campers is choosing the right shelter. Tents, bivy sacks, tarps, and mosquito nets, can all make great shelters depending on weather conditions; sometimes a light sleeping bag tossed out on the ground is all the intrepid adventurer needs to get a good night's sleep. The important thing is to find the best option for you, your journey and the way you choose to travel.

On clear nights the tarp can act as a ground sheet or a windbreak should breezes kick up, and properly rigged tarps can offer comfortable shelter from some of the worst storms. The key here is that the tarp must be rigged up properly or it will be virtually worthless. If you choose to use a tarp as your primary shelter make sure that you are well versed in how to set it up in all kinds of weather, terrain, and lighting conditions. BENEFITS: lightweight, versatile DRAWBACKS: can be difficult to set up unless the user is experienced.

Mosquito nets: Bugs can be a real bother in some climates. On muggy nights when a tent or bivy is too hot, a simple mosquito net may be the perfect thing to keep the bugs off of you while still allowing plenty of airflow to get a good night's sleep. When choosing a mosquito net, make sure that you find one that can be clipped to a tree branch or other stationary object to keep the net away from your skin. Bugs can still bite and sting through the mesh; mosquito nets only work when the fabric is not touching your directly. BENEFITS: Easy to set up, bug free sleeping DRAWBACKS: some of them just lay flat on top of you and the bug can just bite through the mesh.

Bivy Sacks: Bivy sacks are one of my personal favorite camp shelters. Basically a weatherproof liner that slips over your sleeping bag, they are quick to set up, mostly water and bug proof, low profile, and lightweight. If you decide to check out a bivy sack, make sure you get one with a dome that slips over the head so you don't have the fabric lying in your face all night. BENEFITS: lightweight, quick setup, mostly weather and bug proof, low profile. DRAWBACKS: vapor barrier can get make for a damp sleeping bag, can feel crowded, not good for long days of hanging out waiting for weather to clear, no place to stow your gear.

Hammocks: Many travelers swear by their hammocks. They are super lightweight, offer a variety of configurations, very low profile (prefect for stealth camping) and they keep you off of the ground. Because they hang suspended from trees (or other stationary objects) hammocks are less likely to be seen than other shelters - people tend to look where they expect to see things - and their elevated vantage point also makes them impervious to flooding during a storm. Many camping hammocks come with optional mosquito nets for warm, dry nights and weatherproof rain-flies for use during fowl weather. The additional options do take some experience to set up and stake out properly but after a few run-throughs most campers should be able to handle it. BENEFITS: lightweight, off the ground, moderately easy to set up, multiple configurations. DRAWBACKS: can be uncomfortable if you aren't used to them, you've gotta have something to hang it off from.

Tents: Tents are the traditional choice for camping overnight, and modern tents are the best option for many campers - particularly those who plan to spend most of their nights in paid campgrounds. Modern tents are often free-standing designs with simple two or three pole setups. The typical tent can be setup in less than ten minutes the first time you take it out of the bag, after a few trial runs you can probably have your camp set up and be snug and warm inside in five. No matter what your style of travel, there is probably a tent tailor made to your specific needs. From ultra light single person tents to heavy duty mountaineering base camps that can withstand gale force winds, there is a tent for every situation. Most good camping stores can also help you find the right tent for you depending on where and when you will be traveling. BENEFITS: come in a variety of sizes, perfect for hanging out in camp all day, plenty of room to store gear, warm and if properly maintained dry in even the worst of storms DRAWBACKS: bulky, can take time to set up, need a clear piece of ground, highly visible.

Finding a place to sleep at night where you will be will feel comfortable, and secure is one of the most important considerations for the independent traveler. If you plans include camping, take some time and try out a variety of options, talk to experienced campers and choose the shelter that works best for your style, your journey, and your experience level. They can be either propane, butane or even a mixture of the two.

A double-burner stove is generally fuelled by refillable gas cylinder; the most common known to campers over the world is the famous Campingaz bottle. In the UK Calor gas is the most popular but is essentially the same as Campinggaz. What differs is the type of regulator needed for the bottle.

Coleman has come up with their own variety in the last few years known as Coleman fuel. This fuel is a special form of liquid fuel, it is almost you could say a very clean unleaded petrol. They are sold in small containers throughout camping outlets, but the more savvy users buy the fuel simply from their local petrol station. So in essence this a cheap way to run your gas stove compared to LPG canisters or Campinggaz bottles.

My advice would be to start out with gas as it is very straight-forward and pretty much fool-proof, once you are experienced enough it is worth looking at the Coleman variety, but it can have a bit of a learning curve and as it is essentially petrol, you have to be careful when handling it, the downside for me as well is that the smell puts me off. But hey that's just my two cents, hence left to the more experienced camper.

For most people this question can be answered by using the family car. Unfortunately there are not many people out there who can have a car just for the purpose of going camping. If you are regular camper then you may be able to work this in as long as it fits with your job and lifestyle. Estate cars do work best fro camping due to the sheer amount of room available, but many modern hatchbacks offer a tremendous amount of storage space compared to old. They also have 12- volt sockets in the boot which is great if you run a cool box when camping.

There are a few ways if you do not have the luxury of an estate or 4x4 which include a roof rack, roof box and a bike rack as many bike racks let you store other items apart from bikes. If you do carry bikes on the back though you need to be aware of the legal requirement to leave a clear view of your number plates, lights and indicators. This can be overcome with a lighting board mounted on the back of your load.

A roof box can add additional storage space on any size of car which then opens up all sorts of possibilities. Especially if you drive around in a mini and have worried that you would never get all of your camping gear on board, a roof box may be your answer.

Motorcycle is also another popular way to go camping. I think this is in part due to the fact that motorbikes are often seen as a means of expressing your freedom, much the same as camping so they go hand in hand. But it is perfectly legal to tow a trailer with your motorcycle. You can get accessories for your bike to take even more camping gear such as saddlebags, rear panniers, front panniers and a handlebar bag which is purpose built. I know one of my camping friends has a BMW motorcycle and they even supply all the camping equipment themselves for their custom-fit luggage from their accessory range.

The key here is to not overload your vehicle when you go camping; we have all been there especially if you are going with the family. This is not to say that we are against traveling or using a vehicle. You HAVE TO use a charter bus or some other form of ground transportation to get to the campsite but it is minimized.

And if you are going camping in a group, we suggest renting a charter bus instead of each of you driving there on your own. That is serious wastage of money, time and fuel. To make it even more meaningful, get your hands on a Green Bus. Green buses are environmentally-friendly charter buses, using less fuel compared to the conventional hybrid car or bus.

How to Keep Your Sleeping Bag Dry on the West Coast Trail

The West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island, British Columbia is a challenging backpacking hike in conditions that are changeable from step to step and day to day. The hiking terrain is very diverse, and very often near the water. The campsites are all at beaches; and the weather can be wet even without rain. With all of these conditions, it is important to be comfortable in camp and to get good rest to help prevent fatigue on the trail, and possible injury. One of the key elements of maintaining comfort to get good rest is knowing how to manage your sleeping system.

Sleeping Bag Types

Four common types of sleeping bags are readily available. The types relate to the fill material used for insulation. Each has its place and proper care.

The first is the old style barrel bag lined with cotton, filled with synthetic fibers,Second, is the bag filled with down in a synthetic shell,Third is the synthetic fill bag in a synthetic shell, andFourth, is the hybrid bag with a combination of down and synthetic fill in a synthetic shell.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Part of the planning and creation of a sleeping system is knowing where you are going to use the system, what the hazards are in the climate, and how to adapt the strengths and weaknesses of your sleeping system to the environment. On the West Coast Trail, the main problems are water and weight, so we will look at how the relative weights of the bags and how they handle the wet. These are all based on a -12?C bag.

Cotton/wool bags: These bags are quite heavy, around 2 to 2.5 kg, available many places, particularly Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart, and other general stores, $70+. These bags start heavy and as they soak up water, they get heavier. Even though they are filled with synthetic fibers, they lose some insulating capacity due to the cotton soaking up water.Down bags: These bags are available in outdoor stores; they are light at about 1.4 kg and less. These bags range from generally good to highly technical, and ate quite expensive at $300 - $1,000. Down bags are very warm for their weight, but they lose their insulating capacity when wet.Synthetic fill bags: These bags are widely available, can be fairly heavy at about 2.4 kg, very reasonably prices at around $120+, and retain their insulating capacity even when wet.Hybrid bags: These bags have a combination of down and synthetic fill. The synthetic fill is on the bottom, at the feet, and around the neck, as well as a thin layer over the down top. They are light, coming in around 1.6 kg, and are available at Mountain Equipment Coop for about $150+. The down portion loses insulating capacity when wet.

The Hazards

One the West Coast Trail, hiking around surge channels, on rock shelf with pools and standing water, and on beaches is common. Any slip and fall and gear can get wet by falling into the water, even if in the pack. This is a real and significant hazard. Another other main hazard is rain. Everything can get wet when it is raining on the west coast. Even the air is a hazard. The air there holds a huge amount of water and sleeping bags are notorious for absorbing it directly from the air. The next consideration is how to manage these hazards.

Managing Your System

The two main considerations for a sleeping system on the West Coast Trail are the wet and the weight. Managing the weight is important for all the sleeping bag types, but absolutely critical for some. The main ideas of keeping the bag dry are:

Keep it in a dry container, such as a dry bag or a stuff sack with a large garbage bag inside.Leave it in the container when you are not sleeping in it-take it out only when going to bed and re-stuff it when you get up.Take off any wet things in the tent before getting your bag out, and put them away in their own garbage bag. Keep a "sacred dry set" of clothes for inside the tent, and keep them in a separate, dedicated dry bag or stuff sack/garbage liner combination.Wipe down the tent floor if any water gets in before taking out the bag. Making sure the tent is rain proof with a good fly and set it up to avoid splash up under the fly into the tent.

Many people, and especially tour companies, advise you to not take a down sleeping bag. They are managing risks externally for themselves. If you know how to manage it, a down bag is fine. Down bags are light, so they are the ideal for carrying on the West Coast Trail. Following the management suggestions above should make it possible for you to have a down bag no matter what the conditions. Hybrid bags are a good compromise because you do not lose all your insulating value if the bag gets wet. Generally, you would want to avoid the cotton lined bags altogether because of the coldness and the weight, and the synthetic inner/synthetic shell bags are heavy as well, but keep you warm no matter what. If do not have any or much back-country camping experience, go with the heavier, but bomb-proof synthetic/synthetic option. Practice your sleeping system management and get yourself a down or hybrid bag after you are totally secure in keeping your bag dry in all conditions.

I am sure you will agree that we go camping to get away from it all and to revisit nature and we are often prepared to forego the luxuries we have in our modern day living. But the one luxury we all wish to have on fresh morning is the ability to make some nice fresh toast.

This can be difficult to achieve though, traditional camp stoves seldom have a decent grill. So this begs the question what can you do to overcome this problem. Well if you are the kind of camper that goes all out and has an electric hook-up then take a domestic toaster with you. If you have the room to take it in your car then this is a must in my view. It will provide perfect toast and make you the envy of your fellow campers at the campsite. If the thought of this is cheating then there are many camping toasters on the market.

Popular variations include a stainless steel once slice toaster which you hold over the top of your grill. The problem with this method is if you have a family of four and you all want two slices of toast for breakfast, then it will take you a very long time to cook everybody's.

You will hear some campers say that you cannot beat a toasting fork, it can even be something as crude as a stick carved from a nearby tree, where you impale it and hold over the campfire. You may find this variation a bit of a stone-age approach but it is very effective.

My most modern and effective method comes from purchasing a simple toast grill part for my two burner stove. Pretty much all two burner stoves offer this accessory whereby you have some prongs running up from the grill in a pyramid shape which allows you to toast up to four slice of bread at a time.
